Just purchase HW-Q90R Soundbar week ago, but after doing some settings, firmware update and volume calibration, I found out that the both rear speakers volume are too low. Looking at reviews the biggest difference seems to be that the q90r includes 2 rear satellite speakers over the q80r. But how can do the encoding in my surround speakers. We expected at least 5.5 format but with rear speakers almost inaudible we do not get the effect. They can be twiddled to be vastly better. They produce plenty of sound output and have phenomenal audio detail. However, for convenience I bought a Qr90 for one of my TVs and I have to say that I have been very impressed with the sound and value for money and have no complaints about the rear speakers at all. The Q90 tries to 'help' (which is a mixed bag here), so, if you're not connected to an active Atmos source Dolby Digital Plus will NOT be available. And they will sound loud enough. However by lifting the center speaker volume you can somewhat tackle this issue. Don't despair yet. Or is there some setting that can allow for this? I can blast the music out of all of the speakers just by changing the SFE and DTS modes to, I believe it is, Matrix. That means your TV, Blu-ray  and even your HDMI cables all need to be capable of being transmitting the correct signals. Basically, if you know you have a surround source, and you're not getting surround in ADAPTIVE, try STANDARD. My sound bar sits along side a pair of Devialet Phantom golds which are £5k for 2,  and while as a stereo pair they blow the sound bar away, I think for the money the qr90 is a smashing piece of kit. After spending 2 days trying to find the correct 1/4"-20 UNC screw (per the manual) that I needed, I got the speakers on the stand and it was sagging due to the weight and nothing to secure the bottom. to get to rear speaker on/off, then 1 more time to get to rear speaker volume (-6 to +6).using up/ down arrows Easy. This seems aggravating when trying to set it up, but it has the benefit of not leaving you with no sound at all, which is what happens if Dolby Digital Plus is selected and there isn't an Atmos source, so, it's an overall positive EXCEPT during the initial set up. However, theres are some caveats and explanations needed for those struggling with this issue. The rear speakers although not great are audible at a higher volume than when playing an ATMOS movie. The ONE thing I've found that is automatic is that for non-Atmos sources, the sound settings will gracefully downgrade to Dolby Digital. The hw q90r is a 7.1.4 soundbar, almost nothing that you play has so many channels for all the speakers to reproduce sound. I had a Philips 5.1 setup which easily allowed for music etc to play loud on all speakers. So in summary, to those that are not happy, check your settings and ensure your other components can deliver bitstream audio and you will experience the best quality. If you want stereo, then go and buy a stereo system. I have a Samsung surround sound system that is approximately 6 years old, with wireless rear speakers. Yes, their volume varies, but that's what they are supposed to do. Do I wish that if surround encoding wasn't available that the system had a codec to at least mirror sound to the rear speakers? You can only really hear the sound when your ear is up against the speaker. If you are not getting sound from the surround speakers you may have to pair the speakers & update the software to the latest version. However woofer and rear speakers are almost inaudible. The reality is that this sound mode is not really well implemented for  a soundbar with rears like the HW-Q90R. In a 5.1 sound track , the rear speakers will play the rear channel of the sound track. There is no magic, if the soundtrack has been recorded making an active use of the rears it will sound loud enoug in the hw-q90r . My volume  configuration is the following: I live in a flat, and I play movies/series between 12-18 dB in the afternoon, and between 8-12 dB in the evening. All the other modes are content oriented, in standard mode with a 2.0 stereo file you will hear just that, just the front speakers. Adding Samsung rear speakers, a Samsung subwoofer or even a Samsung 4K TV or 8K TV can help you create the ultimate TV room. And after that time I've have to admit that I've changed my mind.
